What is Floating?

Flotation Therapy is a way of achieving deep relaxation by giving yourself an hour of effortlessly floating in a solution of 41% Epsom salt and water.

We are constantly bombarded with outside stimuli & environmental forces outside of our control, the concept behind Floating is shutting off the world. During a Float session our minds and bodies are able to release from these distractions, enabling a deep relaxation/meditation. The weightlessness combined with Epsom salts, also creates an ideal environment for skeletal and muscular relief of pain & tension.

History of Floating

Back in the 1950’s a man named John C. Lilly developed the first float tank, as we know them today. A medical practitioner and neuro-psychiatrist, John began experimenting with sensory deprivation at the US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), researching the origin of the brains energy sources.

Through his research, he was drawn to consciousness and it’s relation to brain activity. Sensory deprivation benefits were profound in this initial study, finding many more therapeutic benefits of Floating, instigating more research.

Peter Suedfeld and Roderick Borrie of the University of British Columbia, decided to take the studies a little farther in the 1970’s. Experimenting the therapeutic benefits of float tanks and sensory deprivation. They would later go on to name a technique we frequently refer to today. REST, which stands for Restricted Environment Stimulation Therapy, was born.
